Innovations and Evolutions: Country Music to Country Rap

Music is always evolving, whether its the instruments, the artists, the genres, and many other things. Technology and personal taste are constantly changing and the music adapts with it. Music genres are no different. Sometimes, in genres, the most interesting sounds come from mixing completely different styles together. One genre that shows this really well is country rap, sometimes called “hick-hop.” Country rap blends the storytelling and rural themes of country music with the beats and vocal style of hip-hop. Over time the genre has changed a lot, especially in production and popularity. By comparing earlier country rap with modern country rap, we can see how the genre moved from Point A to Point B.

One of the earlier songs that helped bring attention to country rap is “Deliverance” by Bubba Sparxxx (2003, United States)(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q9pX1R0nJXg). This song mixes hip-hop with strong Southern and country influences. One musical element that stands out is the rhythm. The song has a hip-hop beat with heavy percussion and bass, which is typical of rap music. However, the instrumentation also includes guitar and other sounds that feel closer to country and Southern rock. Another important element is the lyrics and storytelling. Bubba Sparxxx talks about growing up in rural Georgia, which reflects themes that are common in country music. Instead of singing like traditional country artists, he raps his verses, which clearly shows the influence of hip-hop. The overall texture of the song is thicker than traditional country music because it uses layered beats and production. Early country rap songs like this helped introduce the idea that rural life and hip-hop culture could exist in the same type of music.

A modern example of country rap is “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X (2019, United States)(https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7qovpFAGrQ). This song became extremely popular and even broke records on the Billboard charts. Compared to earlier country rap songs, the production style is much more modern. The beat is built using trap-style hip-hop drums and digital production, which gives the song a very strong rhythmic groove. Even though the song is heavily influenced by hip-hop, it still includes country elements. For example, the instrumental includes a banjo sample, which is commonly associated with country music. The lyrics also reference horses, riding, and cowboy imagery, which connects the song back to country culture. Another difference is the structure and simplicity of the song. The melody is repetitive and catchy, and the rhythm is very beat-driven, which is typical of modern hip-hop influenced music.

Comparing these two songs shows how the genre evolved over time. Early country rap, like Bubba Sparxxx’s music, still had some connection to Southern rock and traditional country sounds. The instrumentation felt more organic, and the production was less electronic. Modern country rap, like “Old Town Road,” relies much more on digital beats, trap rhythms, and internet culture. The music is also shorter and more repetitive, which makes it easier to spread on streaming platforms and social media.

Personally, I prefer the modern style because the beats are more energetic and catchy. However, I also think the earlier country rap artists were important because they helped create the foundation for the genre. Without artists like Bubba Sparxxx experimenting with mixing rural themes and hip-hop, modern country rap probably wouldn’t exist.

The evolution of country rap shows how genres can change when artists experiment with new influences. Early country rap blended hip-hop with rural storytelling and Southern musical styles, while modern country rap focuses more on digital beats and viral appeal. By comparing songs like “Deliverance” by Bubba Sparxxx and “Old Town Road” by Lil Nas X, it’s easy to see how the genre evolved from its early beginnings into a mainstream style of music.

  1. Hello Tommy, I agree with your point that modern country rap feels more energetic and beat driven compared to earlier songs. The way you explained the difference in production between the earlier organic sound and the more digital style used in “Old Town Road” clearly shows how the genre has evolved over time. Something I also notice with modern country rap is how streaming and social media help songs spread quickly which probably contributes to the shorter and more repetitive structure. It’s interesting to see how the genre still keeps country storytelling themes while blending them with modern hip-hop production.

  2. Hey, I definitely agree with you that today's music is based a lot on the internet culture because a lot of song's that become popular aren't even because they are unique, but it's because they have a lot of attention from everyone at once from things like trends. Old Town Road was a good example of that because it was popular and people enjoy it while out at like parties with people, but eventually it became a thing of the past and now nobody really talks about it.
